What does EPA consider an oil?
Friday, May 20, 2011
Many people have asked what type of oil is included in the Federal EPA definition of "oil" when considering the Clean Water Act and SPCC plans. The EPA uses the U.S. Coast Guard list of "oils." Products are continually under review with the EPA and may be eliminated from the list but others can be added to the list. Below are some of the products currently on the list.

Gasoline, diesel fuel, kerosene, jet fuel, heating oil, edible animal and vegetable oils, motor oil, hydraulic oil, lube oil additives, used motor oil & turpentine. This is not an all inclusive list as over 200 "oils" are on the list. Go to the U.S. Coast Guard Web site to get the complete list as they are adding more liquids every year.

The reason some of the liquids are on the list is because they have characteristics in water that act like traditional oils or the liquids will contaminate water.
