What does EPA consider an oil?

04-16-2010

Many people have asked what type of oil is included in the Federal EPA definition of "oil" when considering the Clean Water Act and SPCC plans. The EPA uses the U.S. Coast Guard list of "oils." Some products are under review with the EPA right now and may be eliminated from the list but below are some of the products currently on the list.

Gasoline, diesel fuel, kerosene, jet fuel, heating oil, edible animal and vegetable oils, lube oil additives, used motor oil & turpentine. This is not an all inclusive list as over 200 "oils" are on the list. Go to the U.S. Coast Guard Web site to get the complete list as they ae adding more liquids every year.

The reason some of the liquids are on the list is because they have characteristics in water that act like traditional oils or the liquids will contaminate water.
