What They Are
Landfills are a prime candidate for geosynthetic liners. Landfills are required to meet certain requirements of the Environmental Protection Agency, and synthetic liners do the best job of meeting those guidelines.
Landfills typically use liners on both the floor and the cap. Oftentimes, a compacted clay liner (CCL) is used in addition to the synthetic liner. However, if good clay is difficult to find, a geosynthetic clay liner (GCL) is used instead.
The most common types of liner used in landfills are 60 mil HDPE for the landfill floor and 40 mil LLDPE for the landfill cap. Usually, a compacted clay liner (CCL) is still required in addition to the synthetic liner. In cases where good clay is difficult to find, a GCL is used instead.
