What They Are
Ponds
At golf courses, reservoirs and other locations, water sometimes needs to be collected for later use, and decorative ponds are increasingly popular with homeowners. These ponds benefit from a synthetic liner because many communities impose water restrictions. Using a liner prevents seepage into the ground, and a simple sump pump keeps the water moving so bacteria and algae growth is controlled.
Canals
In areas where rain is scarce, it's necessary to collect and store rain to raise crops effectively. Water storage is best accomplished with a reservoir or water retention pond and then sent to the fields via canals.
However, in these dry climates, soil itself is very permeable. A liner is needed to prevent losing the water before it even reaches the crops. Using a liner also prevents erosion and is less expensive than concrete or steel troughs.
